Two research projects from SWJTU won the second prizes of the 2014 National Science and Technology Progress Award on the award granting ceremony held on January 9 2015 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Professor He Chuan and Professor Qiu Wenge from the School of Civil Engineering’s tunnel engineering discipline were given the honor for their achievements in shield tunneling and disaster prevention of underground tunneling respectively. Their contributions to tackling major technological hurdles in China’s key construction projects were highly acclaimed.
In recent years, the tunneling engineering discipline of SWJTU ushered in a new era by building platforms for scientific and technological research and introducing talent pool. Led by Professor He Chuan who is a Yangtze Fund Scholar, key laboratories and research teams were set up to deepen academic research in the field. The discipline construction has yielded results by winning projects from the State Natural Sciences Foundation, key S&T programs at the ministerial and provincial levels and high-level S&T accolades.
