Date:2014-06-27

On June 26, Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) inaugurated the first scientific research base conference on the Jiuli Campus. It is the first meeting held to deliberate work on scientific research bases of the university with the focus on tackling problems and proposing plans and strategies for the future. President Xu Fei and the secretary of CPC SWJTU committee Gu Liya were present and the deputy secretary of CPC SWJTU committee He Yun’an presided over the meeting. Research representatives from the schools and departments, and administration divisions attended the meeting.

Vice President Zhang Wengui gave a speech on the development plan of scientific research bases from the year 2014 to 2020, laying out the structure of the bases, the target of fostering international cooperation, the wish to embed national defense into the functions of the bases, and the vision to nurture innovation teams as the soft power support for the bases. The university will implement these measures by upgrading the management mechanism, allocating resources, adjusting resource distribution and guaranteeing the autonomy of the bases.

Leading researchers and professors from key schools and national labs of the university delivered their speeches, briefing the audience of the development, management, achievements and blueprint of their bases.

Presdent Xu Fei concluded the meeting by a summary speech, in which he pointed out problems and challenges of scientific research bases and mapped out priorities for the future. The university aims to achieve more results by introducing cooperation from civil, military and international aspects, by developing engineering, science, arts and bioscience disciplines, by taking advantage of the university’s geographic position in regional and national development, and by beefing up the pursuit of cutting edge technologies and meeting the needs of China’s science and technology development.

President Xu also stressed the importance of cultivating talents in science and technology, saying the university would reform its assessment and awarding systems to motivate young people in doing research. In the end, he said research should facilitate teaching and the university would continue to put teaching quality on top of its agenda. In this sense, the better management of research work and scientific research bases would benefit schools and faculties.
